Power and Theological Ethics with an Intersectional Approach
Welcome to pastor/academic, Kim Penner's website
My Story
I am a full-time pastor and academic "on the side". I live on the Haldimand Tract in Kitchener, Ontario, which is the territory of the Neutral, the Anishinaabe, and the Haudenosaunee Peoples. My PhD is in Theology - with a focus in feminist theological ethics.
But how did I get here? I grew up in the Mennonite church as a pastor's kid. I saw the beauty in people caring for each other and working together for God's love and peace. I saw and felt how an understanding of, and rituals for, life and death wrapped in sacred mystery could be meaningful and helpful.
I also saw the absence of a critical awareness of power and social privilege and disadvantage. Was it really possible to be power neutral, or a "priesthood of all believers?" Did violence only include state violence and physical interpersonal violence? What about social systemic gender based violence? Sexual and racialized violence? The intersections of those?
I'm passionate about understandings and embodiments of the sacred that are committed to peace, justice, and love in all our relationships with an intersectional theory of power and informed by queer theologies.
